DIVINE PROTECTION

GOD'S PART AND OURS

INTRODUCTION

In the OT:
    Man's Part
Level One:  From the fall to leaving Egypt
            Trust God
            Ask God
Level Two:  From leaving Egypt to the Resurrection
Note:  The Old Testament did not end at the cross, that was still part of
the OT and the fulfilling of the law.  The resurrection began the NT.

            Trust God
            Ask God
            Do the Law
    God's Part
He took care of those doing so.  He was their God and they were His people.

Note:  The exceptions were the prophets.  They were as NT men who
spoke the word of God.  This is evidenced by the miracles they
performed by speaking.  Since only God can do a miracle, the word they
spoke must have been the word of God.  This provided verification that they
spoke for God when they spoke to the people.

In the NT

    Man's Part
        trust in His word

trust Him to fulfill His word

        speak His word

    God's Part

        fulfill his word

Note:  Words one speaks, whether from the Bible or not, are only the word
of God when they are according to His will.  HIS word will not return void.

Too many people today are speaking what they think is the word of God to
fulfill their own will and it doesn't come to pass.  Then they lose faith and walk
away from God.  If they just knew the truth they would understand.  I blame
the "Name it and claim it" preachers for this misinformation.

PSALM 91 - Called The Serviceman's Psalm

Notice how God's protection changes in this psalm going from OT to NT.

91:1     He that dwelleth in the secret place of the most High shall abide
under the shadow of the Almighty
Because most high means supreme and almighty means powerful,
I will take the stance that most high refers to God's position and
                    almighty refers to his strength.

91:2     I will say of the Lord, He is my refuge and my fortress: my God; in
                    him will I trust.

91:3     Surely he shall deliver thee from the snare of the fowler, and from
                    the noisome pestilence.

91:4     He shall cover thee with his feathers, and under his wings shalt thou
                    trust:
Here it changes his truth shall be thy shield and buckler.
91:5     Thou shalt not be afraid for the terror by night; nor for the arrow
                    that
flieth by day;
91:6     Nor for the pestilence that
walketh in darkness; nor for the
                    destruction that
wasteth at noonday.
        91:7     A thousand shall fall at thy side, and ten thousand at thy right hand;
but it shall not come nigh thee.
91:8     Only with thine eyes shalt thou behold and see the reward of the
                    wicked.
91:9     Because thou hast made the Lord, which is my refuge, even the
                    most High, thy habitation

91:l0     There shall no evil befall thee, neither shall any plague come nigh
                    thy dwelling.
91:ll      For he shall give his angels charge over thee, to keep thee in all
                    thy ways.
91:l2     They shall bear thee up in their hands, lest thou dash thy foot
                    against a stone.
91:l3     Thou shalt tread upon the lion and adder: the young lion and the
dragon shalt thou trample under feet.
91:l4     Because he hath set his love upon me, therefore will I deliver him:
I will set him on high, because he hath known my name.
91:l5     He shall call upon me, and I will answer him: I will be with him in
trouble; I will deliver him, and honor him.
91:l6     With long life will I satisfy him, and show him my salvation.

(Note: David was speaking to other people and being an example to them at
the beginning. He showed them how God always protected him and why. He told

them what God would do for them if they lived life as he did, trusting God.

David also spoke to NT people.  In verse 4 David said truth would be our shield

and buckler; and in verse 9 he said God was his refuge but our habitation. God spoke

in the last three verses and qualified what David spoke by declaring the same thing
from his own perspective.  David ran to God and we walk with God.)

OLD TESTAMENT PROTECTION
                        PSALM 91

I. Vs 1 He That Dwelleth In The Secret Place Of The Most High
Dwelleth (means to sit down, implies to remain)

Dwelling is:

1. Vs 2 Saying of the lord:  He is my refuge
                                                  He is my fortress
                                                  He is my God
                                                  In Him will I trust

        While in:
Vs 1 The Secret Place (to cover, from a root word-to hide by covering)
            1. feathers - verse 4
    Vs 1 Most High

II. Vs 1 Shall Abide Under The Shadow Of The Almighty
    A. Vs 1 Abiding (to stop, implies to stay)

If one is dwelling in the secret place through trust, then they stand under
        the shadow of God's protection.

    B. Vs 1 Under The Shadow (defense)

1. Vs 3 Deliverance (to snatch away)

a. Vs 3 From the snare of the fowler
            b. Vs 3 From the noisome pestilence

        2. Vs 4 Covering of His feathers

                His feathers are his wings

MT 23:37 Oh Jerusalem, Thou that killest the prophets and stonest
them that are sent unto thee, how often would I have gathered thy
children together, even as a hen gathers her chickens under her wings
                 and ye would not
        3. Vs 4 Under His Wings (an edge or extremity of a bird or an army)

a. Vs 4 Shalt thou trust
II Sam 22:31 the word of the Lord is tried, he is a buckler to
all them that trust in him
PS 18:2 the Lord is my rock, and my fortress, and my
deliverer my God, my strength, in whom I will trust; my
buckler, and the horn of my salvation, and my high tower
II Sam 22:2-3 The Lord is my rock, and my fortress, and my
deliverer; The God of my rock; in him will I trust: he is  my
shield, and the horn of my salvation, my high tower, and
my refuge, my savior; thou savest me from violence

One feels safe here like a child in the arms of their father.  This feeling

of safety comes from trusting God like a the child trusting their father.
This also says that one can't feel the same without standing in this place.

Yet, one can't stand here without dwelling in His secret place.
            b. Vs 5 Thou shalt not be afraid
Vs 5 for the terror by night
Vs 5 for the arrow that flieth by day
Vs 6 for the pestilence that walketh in darkness
Vs 6 for the destruction that wasteth at noonday

The longer one stands in this place, the more one is saved from the
enemy, and the stronger the trust grows.

Even The Most High Thy Habitation

                    c. Vs 12 lest thou dash thy foot against a stone
            b. Vs 13 Thou shalt tread upon the enemy
                1. The lion
                2. The adder
            c. Vs 13 Thou shalt trample under feet the enemy
                1. The young lion

THE TRANSITION
 FROM OT PROTECTION

 TO NT PROTECTION

I. Christ The Protector
    A. OT style

MT 23:37 Oh Jerusalem, Thou that killest the prophets and stonest
them that are sent unto thee, how often would I have gathered thy
children together, even as a hen gathers her chickens under her wings
                 and ye would not
Mt 23:38 Behold, your house is left unto you desolate
Mt 23:43 The kingdom of God shall be taken from you and given to a
nation bringing forth the fruit thereof
    B. NT style (The Cross)

Rom 6:22 Being made free from sin, and become servants to God
Gal 4:1 The heir, as long as he is a child, differs nothing from a
servant, though he be lord of all
Gal 4:2 He is under tutors and governors until the time appointed of
                the father
Gal 4:3 When we were children, we were under bondage to the
                elements of the world
Gal 4:4 When the fullness of the time was come, God sent forth
                His Son
Gal 4:5 to redeem them under the law, that we might receive the
                adoption of sons
Gal 4:6 because ye are sons, God sent forth the Spirit of His Son
                into your hearts
Gal 4:7 wherefore thou art no more a servant, but a son; and if a son,
then an heir of God through Christ
(Note. Gal 4:7 doesn't say because a son, it says IF a son THEN an heir,
because  one is a son if he reaches the fullness of time as a servant and Christ
redeems him as a son. Then the Spirit is in the heart leading the son.)

Summary:
Dwelling (Abiding) is done in the Secret Place (Shadow) of the Most
High  (Almighty), which is Habitation (Dwelling & Abiding) in the Lord
Christ, even the Most High Father, which are one; and is done under the
wing (power) of  His truth (name). When one sets (decides) to love God
by doing the preceding  through his name (the word), the love comes and
grows because He first loved  us; and we see what he does, and has done,
for us. I + II = III with IV & V (Knowledge, wisdom, and the fruit of the
spirit) being the resulting addition by  God.

THE EFFECT OF FEAR UPON DIVINE PROTECTION

I. An Example In Job

Job 1:1 Job was perfect and upright and feared God and eschewed evil

Job 1:10 There is a hedge of God about him, his house, and all he had.

Job 1:4 Job's sons and daughters feasted, eating and drinking

Job 1:5 Job worried that his children had sinned and had cursed God
                        in their hearts

(So)

Job called them and sanctified them

(But)

Job still feared and rose up continually to offer burnt offerings

Job 1:7 Satan had been going to and fro in the earth
(1 Pe 5:8 says that the devil walketh about seeking whom he may devour)

Job 1:8 The Lord asks Satan if he has considered Job, His servant,
who is perfect and upright and who fears God and escheweth evil.

Job 1:9-11 Satan says Job fears God for naught (In other words Job
praises God because nothing is going wrong and it isn't costing Job
                anything to  praise God)
; but if God would do harm to Job, then Job
                would curse God.

Job 1:12 The Lord told Satan that all Job had was already in his hands,
                but don't harm Job himself.

Job 1:13-19 In one day Job lost everything to enemy men except his
children who were eating and drinking and were killed when a mighty
wind brought down the house on them.

Job 1:20 Job, upon hearing this, became repentant in acts of purifying
                himself and worshipped God.

Job 1:22 Job sinned not, nor charged God foolishly

(Note: Job did almost everything right except that he feared. When
he sanctified   his children, he was to trust God.  Instead, he continued
to offer burnt offerings  in fear. Jobs fear was actually faith in darkness.
He had faith that the hedge  would come down even after he did the
things that he was supposed to. Beside  this, his children seemed to be
of age and all his work was pointless. They were outside his house, and
            responsible for their own actions.)

JOB WRESTLED NOT FLESH AND BLOOD EITHER.
